St. Camillus of Lellis, in his
youth, joined the army and lived a dissolute life. He was particularly addicted to
gambling. It took him many years to kick
this habit, but he eventually did. He
then ministered to the incurably ill, founding a religious congregation for
this purpose. He is the patron saint of
hospitals and nurses.
