On the last day, as our Savior predicted, He will welcome the good to share His kingdom in heaven because "I was hungry and you gave me to eat." Then He will reject the wicked from his presence forever because "I was hungry and you never gave me food."
We know that the principal food for which people hunger is the truth of God's word for their starving souls. It is the practice of this charity of the spirit that will mainly determine our destiny in the life to come. And what is less obvious, our practice of this charity will also mysteriously determine the eternal happiness of many others. If no one is saved unless he believes, and no one believes unless he is taught, then there must be teachers of the truth. It must be we who have learned that we are most like Christ the Teacher when, like Him, we also teach: by our words, by our example, and if need be by our sufferings, that God is our Father, that the Church is our loving Mother, and that Jesus Christ is the Lord and Savior of the human race.
