A novena is nine days of devotional prayer. It recalls the time of prayer observed by Mary, the Apostles, and other Disciples of Jesus between Ascension Thursday and Pentecost Sunday. These nine days before the gift of the Spirit set the tradition for novenas.

Saint Peregrine was born at Forli, Italy in 1260, and as a young man he was against the Church. At the age of eighteen, he met Saint Philip Benizi and changed his ways. He repented and began to pray fervently to the Blessed Virgin. Later, with Blessed Francis of Siena, he committed himself to the Servite life. At the age of sixty, he suffered from varicose veins which degenerated into cancer of the leg. Physician Paolo Salazio decided, with the consent of all the friars, to amputate the leg. The night before, Peregrine dragged himself before an image of the Crucified Christ and seemed to see Jesus descend from the cross to heal his leg. The following day, there was no sign of cancer or wound. Saint Peregrine was canonized in 1726.

Saint Peregrine is a patron saint of those suffering from cancer, AIDS, and other chronic diseases. His feast day is May 2.
