St. Elizabeth Ann Seton was
converted to Catholicism by Italian friends and then, in order to support her
family, she started a school. Encouraged
by a priest who saw the need for Catholic elementary schools, she founded a
religious congregation of sisters for teaching in Catholic schools. She is the first American-born saint.
