"Where are you?" God our Father asked this question in the Garden of Eden, and he's still asking it today.
It is the divine question, addressing us in the person of Jesus. He doesn't ask because he needs the answers. He asks to draw us out of the shadows and into his presence, into intimate communion with him. To let ourselves be found by him he asks a lot of different questions like:
- Do you want to be healed?
- Who do the crowds say that I am?
- Does this shock you?
- Whom do you seek?
- Could you not keep watch with me one hour?

Leonard J. DeLorenzo, Ph.D., directs undergraduate studies for the McGrath Institute for Church Life, where he also serves as academic director for Notre Dame Vision, with a concurrent teaching appointment in the Department of Theology. He is the author of three books: What Matters Most, Work of Love, and Witness. He is also co-editor of Dante, Mercy, and the Beauty of the Human Person, for which he also contributed a chapter.
